QUESTIONS ON ACT 1: Answer the following questions on act 1:
1. Why does Shakespeare begin the play with the witches? To establish an interest with the audience, especially the King who the play was written for as he has an interest in Witchcraft, it is also the foreshadowing of what will happen throughout the play.
2. How is confusion suggested by 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3? Confusion is started in these scenes especially through the witches and the dialogue they had and their appearance. Confusion is also suggested when unnatural happenings were occurring.
3. In 1.4, Duncan comments on the difficulty of knowing who is to be trusted. Who enters at this point, and how is this entry ironic? Macbeth, this is ironic as it is Macbeth who ends up betraying his trust and killing him, which is quite opposite to what the King thinks of him.
4. In 1.5.17, what does Lady Macbeth mean by “the milk of human kindness”? Referring to her husbands honour showing a natural loyalty which gives the impression that he wont be able to overcome the evil.
5. In 1.7.1-28, what principal reasons does Macbeth give for not murdering Duncan?
“As i am his kinsman and his subject” He is loyal to King Duncan
“As his host, who should against his murderer shit the door, not bear the knife myself” This is showing that Macbeth welcomed him into his home to offer protection.
6. In 1.7, the Inciting Moment occurs. What is it? When Lady Macbeth convinced Macbeth showing her power of manipulation.
